The Quilt that Wasn't

In early October when I was in the midst of the first trimester and was totally exhausted and nauseous and falling asleep every day around 8:30, I decided to make a Halloween quilt.

I had a stack of leftover 5.5" squares sitting next to a stack of leftover 3.5" squares on my cutting table and they looked nice and Halloween-y so I thought I'd add borders to the smaller squares and turn it into a quilt.  I even had backing fabric. In the end I only had to cut 10 extra squares to make a nice sized lap quilt so I got started.
Only I didn't really feel like making anything and I wasn't very excited about this quilt so progress was painfully so slow.  So slow in fact that it eventually stopped and it has been sitting on the counter ever since.

Do you know how many unfinished projects I have?  Just this one.  I hate leaving things unfinished but I just can't find the energy to finish it right now.  Maybe it's a quilt for next year, but for now I will just have to deal with having an unfinished project.

I have been working on something that I will be sharing soon.  It is a custom order twin sized quilt similar to this one and even though progress on this one has also been slow, it has been fun to work on and I am excited to share it.

Thank you everyone for the well wishes about the pregnancy, we are so excited and your comments mean so much :)

Congrats Marianne!  I will be sending you an email.

Thanks everyone for entering and for stopping by on the 30 Quilts for 30 Years Blog Hop!

30 Quilts for 30 Years Bloghop and Giveaway

A few months ago I was asked to help celebrate Kona's 30th birthday by making a quilt.  The people over at Robert Kaufman are really great and also brilliant because this celebration resulted in some unique and amazing quilts.  You can follow along with the bloghop from November 1st to December 3rd to find out more about each one.

When I was sketching out designs for a quilt, I decided that I wanted to focus on the variety of Kona shades that are available. I also wanted to make a quilt that was not too difficult because I knew that it was going to be available as a free pattern and I wanted it to be accessible to quilters of all skill levels.

So I came up with my Paintdrip Quilt.  It uses pretty much all of my favorite Kona colors together and is beginner friendly.  The quilt pattern, as well as a list of all of the Kona colors used to make the quilt, is available on the Robert Kaufman website.

Robert Kaufman has kindly offered to giveaway a charm pack of all the new Kona colors.  If you haven't seen them in person, they are amazing.  I never thought I would like a pink solid as much as I like Pomegranate, but I think Sangria might be just a little bit better.

To be entered a giveaway, just leave a comment on this post.  The giveaway is open to international readers.  The giveaway is open until Tuesday November 18th at 10am PST.

Bonanza Fabric Bundle (and a sale)

FabricCadabra is now offering a custom fabric bundle that I put together for my Inspiration Mosaics last month.  It is called the Bonanza Bundle and you can find it here.  This bundle uses some of my favorite prints from this year and not only looks pretty great together, but most of the prints are versatile basics too.

I also wanted to point you over to Sew Take a Hike where FabricCadabra is giving away a bundle of Melody Miller's amazing collection Mustang.
And, last but not least, FabricCadabra is having a sale starting today for 15% off all bundles using code BONANZA15.  There are some very tempting options. . .

Bursting Star Cushion (and a giveaway)

QL Book TOur Banner-01
Welcome to my stop on the Quilted Living book tour. When I saw the quilts in this book I knew I wanted to participate in the book tour and I was particularly excited to try out the Bursting Star cushion.
I did want to mix up the colors a little bit and used a few prints from Ann Kelle's Beatbox collection plus a few Kona Cotton colors.  My kids are already fighting over the pillow so I may need to make another one.  DSC_6888-Edit
The pattern was pretty easy to follow and making piping was just as fun as I remembered (not fun, but worth it).  I stuffed mine really full since I know it will be used and abused by my kids so mine is a little more pillowy than the image in the book.  But it is very soft and comfortable and is currently making its home in my daughter's reading corner in her room.
Despite my cushion being a little lumpy, I am really pleased with how it turned out.  As much as I love making quilts and being able to share those with my family, it is fun to do something a little different.
And wouldn't you like to check out Quilted Living for yourself?  The Fat Quarter Shop provided me with a copy of the book to share with one of you.
To enter the giveaway just leave a comment on this post.  I will choose a winner on Saturday November 16th.

You might have noticed that things have been a little quiet around here.  After having a miscarriage a few months ago I have had a difficult time believing that this is real . . .

Cirrus Solids Block of the Month

A while back I saw that Cloud9 Fabrics was accepting submissions for a Cirrus Solids Block of the Month.  The Cirrus Solids colors are wonderful and work well together so I came up with an idea and submitted it.
It looks a little bit crazy, but it is actually a pretty simple paper pieced block that creates some fun patterns when you put the blocks together.  I came up with the pattern below and Cloud9 has some fun options in their blog post.
I also submitted a version of the block in a second colorway.  You can find out more details about the block and download the pattern on the Cloud9 blog.
Cloud9 sent me a Cirrus Solids bundle and the fabrics are so gorgeous. I haven't had a chance to sew with them yet, but I am definitely looking forward to it.

And they are still looking for Block of the Month submissions.  If you are interested you can find out more here.

A Single Chevron Pillow - Winged Blog Tour

Welcome to day 3 of the Winged blog tour!  There are so many fabric lines out there that have great prints, but when I saw Bonnie Christine's Winged collection I fell in love and had to make something with it immediately.
Bonnie sent me 4 fat quarters from the collection (which I of course forgot to take a picture of) and I knew I wanted to make a pillow.  These are my favorite prints from the collection because they are gorgeous and versatile.  I think they will be finding their way into lots of future projects.

I decided on this design after playing around with some options in EQ7.  I like how the pillow shows off the prints and how it is very wing-like.  It seemed fitting.

I used the 4th fat quarter for the back of the pillow.  You can see that my pillow form was probably a little too big for my pillow (woops!) but it was the closest one I had.

I didn't take photos as I made the pillow so I'm not going to write up a tutorial, but I am uploading the templates for the pieces in case you want to make your own.  You can download them here.

Since I am only day 3 of the blog hop there are lots more pretty projects on their way.  You can see the full list on Bonnie's blog.  You should definitely check out Whitney's pretty DIY Flower Garland post from yesterday and check Bonnie's blog since we will be hopping over to her blog for day 4.

And if you aren't already following Bonnie, she has more pretty coming in the very near future and her Instagram account is a feast for the eyes.

Lotus Pond Baby Quilt

Guess what guys, I actually finished a project!  I have had a stack of Lotus Pond sitting on my desk since it was released and I had no idea what I was going to do with it.  So one day I just started cutting it and making it into flying geese and this is how it ended up.
lotus pond quilt
I really, really love these prints.  They colors are bright and perfect for babies.  This quilt used less than half of my 1/4 yard bundle and I am glad to have more left for future projects.

There are several ways to make flying geese, but my favorite is this ruler.  It is easy, accurate, and doesn't produce waste. Plus the ruler tells you how wide to cut your fabric strips and what your finished flying geese size will be.  If you have been afraid of flying geese I definitely recommend this ruler.

The backing and border are one of my favorite Lotus Pond prints and the binding is Kona Mediterranean.  lotus pond quilt
Since I didn't make this for a particular purpose and I am quickly running out of quilt storage, I have listed this one in my Etsy shop.

Finished size: 42" x 50"
