Sundown Quilt - Radiant Orchid Quilt Challenge

When I saw the info about the 2014 Pantone Quilt Challenge at Adrianne's blog I knew that I needed to participate.  Purple is my favorite color and it seems like I don't use it nearly enough so this was the perfect excuse.

I started with a stack of purple prints and shot cottons and added some pinks, corals, yellows and grays. These are pretty much all of my favorite colors and several of my favorite prints.  It was a very fun and happy project to work on.  I don't have many (any?) fabrics that are the exact radiant orchid shade but I did my best.
Sundown - 2014 Pantone Quilt Challenge
After reading Jess's post the other day about using doubled up batting I decided to give it a try.  It definitely makes the quilt a little more cushion-y which is nice for a baby quilt, but I don't know if I would do it again.  It made the quilt a little stiff and I think I prefer a single layer.  It definitely makes the quilting looks more defined.

I used Alison Glass Sunprint for the backing and a Lizzy House print for the binding, I think it's from Guising.  That purple in the binding is my absolute favorite shade of purple.

I really hopes that the year of Radiant Orchid brings about more purple fabrics because this put a serious dent in my purple collection.  You can find more photos of Radiant Orchid quilts in the flickr group and read more about it here.

  1. Beautiful quilt! I think a lot of your purples are in the radiant orchid family, and they look so pretty with the orange and yellows. How big is the quilt?

I have to tell you that my 21-year old son says, "If you read my mom's blog, you may recognize my hands and feet." Your daughter may appreciate his comment.

  10. Fabulous color choices/arrangement!(I also really do dig the double batting look.) I love this quilt and I've pinned it to my "Quilty Goodness" board on Pinterest (with proper credit, of course!). Feel free to follow me if you'd like: http://pinterest.com/lipglass/quilty-goodness/

  11. Erica, this is just totally stunning! I LOVE it! I really like how your quilting makes diamonds on the back of the quilt, and the double batting does emphasise the quilting (although I can imagine it makes for a very heavy quilt!). I really like how you've used purple in a way that it appears in nature - I think you've brought out the best in it!

  31. Hi Erica, Your quilt is such a great example of using value in quilts. Could I have your permission to use it as an example for an upcoming presentation I am putting together for Portland Modern Quilt Guild? All the Best!

  34. Lovely colour combination and design. I find wool batting has better puff factor than other battings like cotton or poly cotton blends.

  38. Man this is just downright gorgeous. I love the way the colors tumble into each other in such an organic way. The colors are so beautiful together, and remind me of tropical sunsets. :) The backing is so vibrant and goes so well, too! And of course that muted grey-violet (I have some of that print in that colorway, too, I love it!) is just right as the binding. Love love love. :)
